This upcoming summer, Mt. SAC Early College Academy will begin hosting summer school classes on June 22. Students who need to make up a class or who want to get ahead in their dual enrollment courses are welcome to sign up for the summer semester.
“It’s an opportunity to get ahead or create flexibility,” MECA Counselor Claire Contreras said. “Taking a required course in the summer can free up room in the schedule during the school year for electives, advanced classes, or programs that better match their interests and goals.”
Summer school is also a great tool for incoming freshmen to get familiar with the school prior to the beginning of the school year.
“Our incoming 9th grade course is a great way for our new students to get familiar with our school and each other,” Contreras said.
The first of the available college courses is University Practices for Academic Success or STDY 100. It is from Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. Professor Ja-Hun Tolbert will instruct the class.
College Success Strategies or COUN 2, will be available to take as well this summer semester. The class will be held Tuesday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. The class will be instructed by professor Charlie Nguyen, who has taught the class at MECA many times in the past
Both of these courses are available for students who are entering their Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. However, this last course is only available for incoming juniors and seniors.
Earth Science or GEOL 8, as well as an Earth Science Lab. The course will be held Tuesday through Thursday, 12:00 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. The instructor will be Professor Sadie Kingsbury, as she has taught the class many times in the past at MECA. Keep in mind that this class is MANDATORY for Cal-GETC students.
For incoming freshmen, there is a Study Skills summer class option as well. The class will focus on helping students transition from middle school to high school and will be worth five high school elective credits.
Study Skills will begin at a later date than the college courses, that being July 13. The class will be held Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
It is worth noting that all summer classes will end on the same day, that being July 31.
