As the end of the year draws closer, unit exams and weekly quizzes are quickly adding up for Mt. SAC Early College Academy students. It is a common occurrence for students to struggle with the material they are taught in class and need more help to get a better understanding before exams. However, it isn’t very well-known on campus that there is a tutoring service.
Tutoring is hosted in the MPR office on Tuesdays in room nine next to the Media Center on Wednesdays from 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. There are also tutoring hours on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Jonathan Ramirez—the tutoring aid for MECA—shared that he specializes in math, but is committed to helping students understand material they are learning, regardless of the subject.
“I try to help students understand what they learn in class [and] explain it in a different way,” said Ramirez, who is ready to help students who need assistance in all types of subjects and is ready to work with all types of learners. “People don’t all learn the same. We have to figure out ways to explain the material.”
Moving Mindz is a student aid resource program utilized by a variety of school districts across Los Angeles county. Serving school districts from Cerritos, all the way to La Puente, and West Covina Unified. The program was founded in 2015 and has served over 135 schools since it was first established..

As of late, the future of the program appears uncertain. The school administrators are evaluating whether or not the service is worth keeping on campus, as it is a resource paid by the school.
“We want to know if the program is something we’re going to continue to pay for,” Martinez said. “[MECA] will have some type of tutoring [next school year],” she explained.
Martinez also clarified that students have the ability to schedule tutoring sessions with a select few of their teachers, “We also have tutoring with our [math] teachers,” she said.
Overall, the tutoring program is an important resource that MECA students should have access to if they need to get a better understanding in their classes. Even if the current program is discontinued, there will still be other opportunities for tutoring services in the future.
