A new break policy went into effect at Mt. SAC Early College Academy on March 9. Students are no longer allowed to go outside to take their class breaks. Class breaks, which are up to the teacher, are a five to 10 minute break during class where you are able to have some free time.
Class breaks will still be allowed for teachers who choose to give them; they will now be only inside classrooms, rather than students being allowed to go outside.
The reason for the new policy was due to students “interrupting” the PE classes when taking their class breaks outside.
The new break policy will not only affect students taking class breaks but also students in PE classes. The policy allows students in PE classes to fully participate and focus their attention.
The new break policy will only apply to classes that take their breaks when a PE class is outside. Those who have their breaks when a PE class is not outside are allowed to have their break outside.
The new policy was introduced by assistant principal Sara Martinez, who sent emails to all staff and teachers informing them about the new policy.
The new break policy has also changed the bathroom policy during breaks for breaks when PE is in session. Only one student will be allowed to go to the bathroom during class breaks.
