Fiat Lux: Let There Be Light

Categories:

Did you know UCR invented cuties? Most people don’t, but students on the field trip learned all about it! On November 21, 11th and 12th grade MECA students had the exciting opportunity to visit this innovative campus.

One of the university’s guiding principles is Fiat Lux: “Let there be light.” This motto, shared by all University of California campuses, represents a commitment to learning and discovery. It is especially fitting for UCR, who also developed their own avocado, the Luna UCR. This avocado, known for its nuttiness and black-ripening rind, was recognized as one of TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2023.

Aside from these fun facts, students also learned about UCR’s different academic programs. With over 80 majors in total, UCR offers academic pathways for every type of learner. The university’s entomology program is particularly distinguished, as it ranks second in the world.

“My favorite part was just walking around and seeing the students live their different college lives,” said junior Emma De La O. By exploring the campus, students were able to see the size and layout of the university, as well what student life is like. Experiencing this helped them determine whether UCR is the right fit for them, which will be useful as they begin applying for colleges.

Afterwards, attendees were free to explore the campus on their own. Many of them stopped by the two-story bookstore, browsing everything from clothing and plushies to stationery and snacks. Students also checked out the HUB plaza, which features popular spots like Subway and Panda Express. Thankfully, this gave them plenty of chances to rest and refuel.

As they explored, students were able to see different parts of the beautiful campus. One of the most recognizable landmarks was the UCR Bell Tower, which rises from the center of campus and serves as a popular meeting spot for students.

Overall, this field trip was more than just fun; it was a real-life example of “Fiat Lux” in action! As students prepare to enter college themselves, they saw firsthand the determination and curiosity that drive learning at UCR. Moving forward, they can carry this same passion, lighting the way as they continue their educational journeys and inspiring others to do the same.
