MECA’s Cheer Team kicked off their season in spectacular fashion, taking stage at one of college football’s most anticipated matchups: the UCLA Bruins vs. the Minnesota Gophers. Performing before a roaring crowd at the Rose Bowl, MECA’s talented cheerleaders energized the fans, showcasing their impressive stunts, high-energy routines, and school spirit. Their appearance at such a notable event not only put their skills on display but also highlighted the growing impact of Mt. SAC early college academy in the district.

The MECA Spirit Squad is coached by Julie Shigo, who is also an Office Assistant on campus. She started the squad last school year in 2023, and they were very successful for it only being their first year. Coach Julie has lot’s of experience with coaching cheer teams as she has coached various teams in the past. The spirit squad has been practicing since the beginning of summer after their tryouts, putting in hard work for their competition and performance season.

Audrina Villegas (9), Autumn Pagan (11), Sadie McBean (12), Emma Marquez (9), Hailey Huizar (9), Jasmine Arce (9), Joselin Gonzalez (9), Meylin Pavon (12), Sarah Ulloa (12), and Adela Angulo (12) practicing at the big field.

The squad did an impeccable job performing at the game and cheering on those Bruins at this much anticipated game. Some seniors on the team even got noticed by the UCLA dance coaches and were invited to try out. Even Timmy was noticed at the game because he was the only school mascot there and the crowd loved him!  The game was close as the score was 21 for Minnesota and 17 for UCLA. MECA’S spirit squad had been preparing to perform at the game many weeks in advance, where they had to practice two different dances to perform at the game. Jasmine Arce, a 9th grader at MECA, who is on the spirit squad stated that she had never performed at a huge game like that, and it’s something they hadn’t done as a team so, “performing at a UCLA football game and going out there… That was fun. It was something I have not done in cheerleading before, so I liked it”.

When asked how cheerleading has impacted Jasmine’s life, she stated that, “It’s made me come a bit out of my shell and my comfort zone because I’m a wrestler, and I did jujitsu all my life before cheerleading. So I went from beating people up to cheering them on. So it was a switch, and it’s a kinda nice switch”. Now, the team is preparing for their upcoming Christmas parades, and also a performance at Vine Elementary, where Jasmine hopes that maybe, “we can inspire them to do something that might be out of their comfort zone or find themselves because that is kind of what cheerleading does”.

The UCLA Bruins, representing the University of California, Los Angeles, have built a reputation as one of the most successful athletic programs in the country. Known for their iconic blue and gold colors, the Bruins’ history is filled with unforgettable moments, especially in basketball. With 11 NCAA championships—more than any other school—UCLA’s men’s basketball team set the gold standard. The Bruins’ success on the court has earned them a special place in the hearts of sports fans across the country.

But UCLA’s athletic prowess extends far beyond basketball. The university is a powerhouse in football, volleyball, soccer, and track and field, consistently competing at the highest levels. As a member of the Pac-12 Conference, UCLA is known for its blend of academic and athletic excellence. Many of its athletes go on to achieve success both in professional sports and in their post-college careers. Whether it’s their stunning Olympic athletes, top-tier football players, or dominating volleyball teams, the Bruins are a force to be reckoned with.

The Minnesota Gophers of the University of Minnesota also have a rich and storied athletic tradition, with passionate fans and a legacy of success that stretches across decades. Known for their maroon and gold colors, the Gophers compete in the Big Ten Conference, one of the most competitive conferences in collegiate sports. While Minnesota’s athletic programs span a wide variety of sports, it’s the university’s football and hockey teams that really stand out.

Minnesota’s football program has a long history of success, with multiple national championships and a reputation for tough, hard-nosed play. But it’s the Gophers’ men’s hockey team that has become legendary. With several NCAA championships under their belt, the team is considered one of the top programs in college hockey. Many Gophers have gone on to make a mark in the NHL, continuing the team’s rich tradition of excellence. Beyond football and hockey, Minnesota also boasts strong programs in basketball, wrestling, and volleyball, with each team regularly competing for national titles.

At the University of Minnesota, athletics and academics go hand in hand. The Gophers’ commitment to both success on the field and in the classroom makes them a respected institution in college sports. For Minnesota fans, it’s not just about winning—it’s about pride, tradition, and a deep connection to their team.

Whether you’re cheering for the UCLA Bruins or the Minnesota Gophers, both programs represent a commitment to excellence, passion for their sports, and a strong sense of community. From UCLA’s basketball legacy to Minnesota’s hockey dominance, these teams are much more than just schools—they’re institutions with a deep connection to their fans and a rich history that continues to inspire the next generation of athletes.

But as the final whistle blew from this game, it was the Minnesota Golden Gophers who took the win. Despite UCLA lossing, the cheerleaders’ from all around infectious energy, dazzling stunts, and spirited routines reminded everyone what college sports are truly about: passion, dedication, and community.

MECA’s cheer team performance not only lifted the spirits of the crowd but also showcased the growing talent and influence of Mt. SAC’s Early College Academy. Whether it’s an exciting win or a challenging loss, MECA’s cheerleaders proved that school spirit doesn’t fade—it only grows stronger.

This thrilling season opener was just the beginning for MECA’s cheerleaders, and as they continue their journey, one thing is certain: wherever they go, they’ll bring the same level of energy, enthusiasm, and pride. Here’s to many more unforgettable performances ahead!
