The Court is Calling | Basketball Team Tryouts Are Active

Interested in playing basketball? Tryouts for MECA’s basketball team are approaching.

Gabriel Nichols announced on StudentSquare Tuesday morning that there will be co-ed basketball tryouts for the winter 2026 semester. Tryouts will be held at the basketball courts on the blacktop next to the boys’ locker room. The times for tryouts will be 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, and Thursday, Feb. 24, after a rain delay caused tryouts to be moved.

“We had probably 16 to 17 [students] at tryouts and like three or four more that were unable to make it. So, approximately 20,” said team coach Gabe Nichols..

The team this year has big shoes to fill, after the perfect season the 2025 Timberwolves had, holding a 3-0 record. Most of the heavy hitters of last year’s team were seniors who have since graduated.

This season, Nichols is looking forward to a young core that’ll be able to develop and that’ll play as a winning team.

“What I am looking forward to this season is developing our new team because we were very senior-heavy last year,” Nichols said.

Jared Jimenez is a senior at Mt. SAC Early College Academy. This is his fourth year as a staff member of The Academy Chronicle. He has been an editor in the 2024-2025 school years, and has recently been promoted to Co-Editor-In-Chief. In his free time, he enjoys drawing, listening to music, and watching movies—with his favorite being Back to the Future. He values friends and family, and wishes to have a career in something he enjoys. Jared plans to go to college and is considering UCLA or Cal State San Bernardino. From there, he wants to score a well-paying, interesting job and travel to Japan if he gets the chance.
