Freshman Valentina Hernandez is an aspiring teacher and journalist. She has plans to go to college in New York to pursue her writerly dreams.

Hernandez first heard about MECA in middle school.

“I had to go with my friend, I was gonna go to, you know, the parade in Glendora, the Christmas Parade,” Hernandez said. “My school brought out this flyer that said the names of the schools that were going to be [there].”

Hernandez and her mother saw that MECA was on the flyer due to their cheer and started looking into the school.

“I decided to attend MECA because it had a lot of resources and because it had college classes. And because [I found out] that you could do college classes as a freshman, which they said was a new thing,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez has several hobbies, including walking her pug, Rocky, and drawing.

“I like to walk my dog. I like to go to the beach, and I like to go to the mall…I also like to draw houses and flowers,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez has found a passion in the art of writing, which started when she was in elementary school.

“I like writing, I used to write when I was in 8th grade…I like to read classic books, like ‘Great Expectations’ by Charles Dickens. I discovered my passion [for writing] by seeing a lot of people writing comic books when I was in fourth grade,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez will possibly pursue the career of a kindergarten teacher or a first-grade teacher and has already thought about what she will do after high school.

“I want to go to Columbia University because I like writing, and that school specializes in journalism and stuff like that,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez chose not to take journalism at MECA because she is currently taking a college class, Study 100, with Nicole Salazar.

“[Study 100] is my favorite class because we are learning about how to be successful in college, and what stuff you should be doing and what stuff you shouldn’t be doing,” said Hernandez.

Hernandez is ready to make her mark on MECA’s campus as a future teacher and journalist.
