This year at Mt SAC Early College Academy (MECA), senior Tepochtli Cervantes has grown a lot throughout his years of high school. When he first came to MECA, he was just another freshman who was essentially a fish out of water.

“I would say that my first year of school was usually inspiring, and it has taught me a lot, just like the other students who have just become high schoolers,” Cervantes said. “Like I would say it’s kind of a brand new experience, it’s like a brand new thought and experience for my mind to grow from a middle school student to a high school student.”

One thing that has really inspired him a lot is when he took the class for College and Career Readiness (CCR), and that class has inspired him by making him think that high school and college are very important parts of life.

“I think CCR is like a very good course for everyone to take, because it’s like showing a mind map and directions to prepare students for college, and so I think this is a very good class.”

Cervantes explained, “This inspired me because it made me think that college is very important, and so I will work harder for it.

Like many high school boys with athletic passions, Cervantes has an affinity for physical activity. He has shown how much he loves being active on the field by joining as many sports teams as he can that are offered on campus.   Cervantes has been a member of the soccer and basketball teams, as well as participating in class competitions.

“I like the feeling when I run on the field, the heart-pumping moment, and the intensifying moments that get me excited on the field. Not just that, but that gets me excited about engaging in sports, and it would look better on my college application for the future,” Cervantes said.

Not only does he have a passion for sports and being active, but he is also very organized about his plan for the future. Whenever he has a chance to learn more and be engaged in any college activities, he would always be the first person in line.

“I think it is very important to have a good planner beforehand for my college life, so that when I go to college, I will have a clear mind path for what I want to have done or accomplished,” Cervantes said. I think this would be important for my college life because I want to have a better college experience, and that would make me closer to being defined as a success.”
