Recap on the First Semester

Categories:

In case you forgot – here’s a recap of all the events that happened at MECA in the first semester.

August

Senior Sunrise – August 22nd

Senior Sunrise started around 5:45 a.m. and ended around 7:00 a.m. They had picnic blankets laid on the grass for students to relax, a photo booth for students to take pictures, and created letters for their future selves, which will be open at Senior Sunset.

Link Crew Picnic – August 22nd

The link crew picnic was a great welcoming event for the freshmen; students enjoyed ice cream, interactive games like tic-tac-toe, a badminton net, a spot for students to lie on the grass, and many other activities that took place during the event. These events were hosted in front of the ASB classroom, and students also had an extended lunch.

Pancake Breakfast – August 29th

As students excitedly waited in line, they enjoyed pancakes with whipped cream and syrup made by Alex, who works at MECA as a security guard, along with other staff.

September

Class Competition – September 12th

In September, we hosted our first class competition, which included a dance performance from MECA’s Spirit Squad. It also featured  MECA’s mascot, Timmy the Timerwolf, who gave out snacks and high-fives to boost students’ excitement. The class competition had games of Tug of War for students; it was the freshmen vs sophomores, then juniors vs seniors, concluding in the sophomore class winning. There was also a staff vs seniors game, with the staff winning.  The next game required students of each class to cheer the loudest to win class points, which the junior class won.

Aquaponics Project – Ongoing

Anna Torres-Strong has been teaching for five years here at MECA. Each year in her Environmental Science class, students take part in an aquaponics project where they grow plants without the use of soil, instead using the fish’s bacteria to give nutrients for plants. The plants, in turn, clean and filter the water for the fish to use again.

October

Homecoming Football Game – October 2nd

The Homecoming flag football game last season featured two MECA teams consisting of both female and male players, ranging from freshmen to senior students. The teams were named Timber and Wolves.

Fall Fest – October 24th

Fall Fest, MECA’s annual festival where students celebrated Halloween, featured clubs selling snacks, food, and games through a ticket system. Students also had a costume contest. Students picked out one person for the winner of the contest, and the person was surprisingly an elementary student who was dressed as Princess Peach.

December

Covina Christmas Parade – December 6th

The last event of the year was the Christmas parade. MECA Spirit Squad participated in the Covina Christmas Parade and won third place as they performed to the song “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande.

Finals Week – December 15th-18th

Students were tense about taking two finals in a day, but due to the hard work and effort students put into their finals. Students were dismissed three hours early that week, so that students could get a good rest at home and get prepared for the next test they were going to take.

Overall, the semester was filled with fun events for both students and staff.
