Where can students find jobs today? Online is the best place to go rather than newspapers.
Getting a first job can feel overwhelming for many high school students, especially if you’re not sure where to start or don’t know what places hire teenagers with little to no experience. As more students look for ways to earn money, build skills, and gain independence, there are many opportunities available from nearby businesses that are teen-friendly and easy to apply to.
Many local businesses hire high school students for part-time jobs, especially in areas like retail, food service, and customer support. According to high school counselor Claire Contreras, the application process is a lot simpler than you would imagine.
Alumnus Julia Pollard had several jobs in high school including at Red Robin and as a Waterworks Swimming Instructor. “Getting to meet new people, getting to learn new things about them, and making new friends” are the best part, said Pollard. “You typically would provide your work history, if any, list of names for references to speak on your behalf, as well as a resume,” said Contreras.
There are a lot of points to look at when you’re looking for a job. “[You would want to look] if the people working there seem happy, friendly, and that it would be a great environment to work at,” said Contreras.
She also added that students should look closely at pay ranges, scheduling flexibility, and workplace expectations before applying. Popular places to start searching for jobs are Indeed and ZipRecruiter.
The most common first-job options are fast-food places like Chick-fil-A, In-N-Out, McDonald’s, and local restaurants; they often hire students starting at age 16. Large retail stores such as Ross, Dollar Tree, and T.J. Maxx also hires students part-time during busier seasons. Many grocery stores offer entry-level positions, such as a courtesy clerk or cashier assistant.
College and Career Readiness teacher, Andrea Pedroarias, said, “Places like Target are good to start off seasonally, and then potentially you can get a full-time position. ”
Getting a first job can have a big impact on students by helping them develop time-management skills, communication skills, confidence, and other abilities that will benefit them later on. “The pros are you have money to spend that is your own and do as you see fit, you get a sense of freedom and independence,” said Pedroarias.
Contreras advises that if you´re looking into getting a job you should ¨Be prepared. Have your resume and list of references handy. A lot of employers might interview you on the spot or at least take your information. You should also ensure you are dressed appropriately, in case you are interviewed on the spot. It’s important to make a good first impression.¨
Students interested in applying for jobs should start by researching workplaces that align with their interests, schedule, and transportation options. Applications are typically completed online, though some locations accept paper forms. Students can visit Ms. Contreras in Room 13 for help with résumés, application tips, or more information on how to get a job.

I think this article is really interesting and super helpful! Many websites don’t include the resources and tips that this article includes, like a list of teen-friendly jobs to apply to. The article and pointers in the interviews are very informative overall.
