Flourishing artist Odysseus Miller is a freshman at MECA, a hidden gem of creative talent.

Art has been a part of Miller’s life since he was a child, and his passion for it only seemed to increase during the COVID-19 pandemic, as he had more free time to draw.

Miller said, “I’ve always liked [art] since I was pretty young, but during…COVID, I had a lot of time inside to do stuff, so I would…draw.”

Miller is known for being “very bright…[and] intelligent,” said Andrea Pedroarias, MECA’s CCR teacher.

“He has his own way of doing things, and his own opinions about life in general…I see his artistic abilities as well, and he’s a pleasure to have in class.” Pedroarias said.

Miller’s polite and pleasant nature is known throughout MECA by students and staff alike.

Throughout his classes, Miller is known for his creative talent.

“I like art. I do all types of it, collage, ceramics, sculpting, drawing, writing…My passion is art.” Miller said.

Miller is interested in a number of different hobbies, including playing the guitar, hiking, writing short stories, drawing, watching movies, reading, and listening to music.

“I like to play Dungeons & Dragons, read, listen to music, hike, and draw in my free time,” Miller said.

Many types of expression through art have interested Miller, especially through the types of media he enjoys, namely La Dispute, an American post hardcore band formed in 2004.

Art has captivated Miller, especially in ceramics class taught by Samantha Lujan.

“It’s awesome…We’ve been making little jars, pinch pots, learning how to carve, glaze, and decorate,” Miller says of the class.

Miller recently made his first non-functional sculpture, la calavera, a type of decorated skull.

“My favorite class is definitely ceramics. I love being able to do fun projects where I can focus on one art piece for a long time.” Miller said.

Miller shared what his dream job would be as an adult, based on his interests.

“My dream job would be an art-based profession, like an author or painter.”

Miller is unsure what he will study in college yet, but he shared his interests that he might end up studying.

“I’m not completely sure what I´ll study in college yet, but archeology, English, and environmental science interest me a lot.”
