Receiving a round of applause, Mt. SAC Early College Academy recently held a movie night, featuring Tim Burton’s beloved classic: The Nightmare Before Christmas, concluding the evening with a sea of smiles from attendees.

Walking in, the MPR was set up nicely, with several tables and chairs scattered across the room. Students had already begun to filter in as chairs were moved closer to certain groups. The event itself was both spirited and comfortably lively, accompanied by the light chatter of the audience throughout.

It was far from that of a theater, but nonetheless enjoyable.

“The movies are really fun because you still get to interact with your friends,” said junior Angela Smith. If anything, the experience was more of a social gathering, allowing students to sit with their friends.

The event was fairly small, boasting a small crowd of a little more than 40 people.  The majority of the participants were freshmen and sophomores.

Referring to her previous school, Connie Molina, a freshman, added, “It’s not the same…we usually have to be assigned to be somewhere.”

Molina later stated how she enjoyed the freedom that the movie night provided, allowing her to get with her friends and talk in the darkness of the MPR. In comparison, MECA supplied Molina with a carefree escape.

Sophomore Krista Pena had a vastly different experience.

“It low-key freaked me out…I´m not a fan of this specific movie, but I love Tim Burton,” Pena said.

Despite her enjoyment of the director himself, the movie was not exactly to her liking.

Even if the movie wasn’t interesting, students weren’t left without refreshments and food. This time, ASB gave an opportunity to the 3D printing club for funding, allowing them to sell food during the event.

Accompanied by their adviser Tiffany Banh, club president Tepochtli Cervantes sold chips, sodas, and pizza for prices ranging from $1 to $2. In the end, all funding went back to the club to be used for filament and savings towards another 3D printer.

This time around, the advertising was well-organized, promoting the event through multiple sources, namely, the weekly news and several posters littered around the school.

Following the end of the movie, students ended the night off with a round of applause as the lights clicked back on, much to the dismay of the audience and their eyes.

Especially in mid-November, The Nightmare Before Christmas serves as a great transition between two highly celebrated holidays, as lovable Halloween characters experience the magic of Christmas.

In terms of the movie night itself, it was very entertaining and did a great job of bringing the students of MECA together.
