!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!

It seems like Gravity Falls has made a bit of a resurgence as of recently. With a new ARG (Alternate Reality Game) and novel. Could this mean that a new season 3 is in the works? No. But there may be some new content on the way!

Gravity Falls is an animated kids show created by Alex Hirsch that debuted on June 15, 2012 airing on Disney Channel, later moving to Disney XD. The show centered around two twins, Dipper and Mabel visiting their Great Uncle Stan for the summer in  Gravity Falls. A small town in Oregon. The show was a massive hit, receiving critical acclaim for its overarching story and mystery.

It ran for four years before ending on February 15, 2016 after 2 seasons. The finale broke records, reaching 2.9 million viewers, the highest number in Disney XD history. Despite the show ending on a solid note, some fans have been asking for a season 3 for ages.

Back in 2015, Alex made a Tumblr post about the end of the show. He said, “This is 100% my choice, and its something I decided on a very long time ago, I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end. There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are cancelled before they ever get a chance to pay off.”

Nearly eight years later, at the tail end of 2023, Alex Hirsch announced that there would be a new Gravity Falls novel that would be released in July of 2024 called The Book of Bill. This novel would be based around Bill Cipher, the series’ main antagonist. Originally appearing in the first episode at the end of the show’s intro as a zodiac, later being introduced as an antagonist in the season one episode Dreamscapers. Bill is a one eyed yellow triangle with a top hat. Originally from the second dimension, he massacred his entire dimension including his parents. He then resided in the Nightmare Realm, where he would repeatedly attempt to “help” with people from the real world. Eventually he would find his way into Gravity Falls and unleash his apocalypse called Weirdmaggedon.

Fans were ecstatic after hearing this news. A look into Bill’s backstory and finally getting the answer to Bill’s “death” in the series finale! Months later, the book finally came out, becoming an overnight success. It quickly grew to be a #1 New York bestseller.

For a quick overview of The Book of Bill, it’s a journal written by Bill himself as a last ditch effort to escape the Theraprism, which is essentially rehab for interdimensional villains. After being defeated by Stanley Pines, Bill Cipher recited an incantation to a powerful extra-dimensional entity called The Axolotl. Apparently, Bill’s pleads were heard and he was referred to extra-dimensional therapy and if rehabilitated, be reincarnated into a random creature. This all sounded like bogus to Bill, so he created the book during arts and crafts time and sent it to our world.

There’s so many fun surprises and easter eggs that it’d be enough to talk about in its own article. But, for now, there is more stuff to unpack outside of the book. Located at the very beginning of the Book of Bill there is an address to a website called thisisnotawebsitedotcom.com where there is an interactive PC where you can type in words and codes to get different results on the screen.

Now, what does all this mean? Could there be a revival of Gravity Falls on its way? It very well could be. Even though a third season is seemingly out of the question, there’s still possibilities for new comics, novels, and more animated content such as a spinoff or even a movie. Keep in mind, this all just teases and speculation, so it isn’t 100% confirmed that Gravity falls is getting a revival, however seeing this explosion in new content for a show that ended nearly 10 years ago is truly a sight and a sign of how loved the show is to this day.
