Suicide Hotline Number Changing

Suicide Hotline Number Changing

Suicide is the twelfth leading cause of death in the United States, the fourth leading cause for those ages 35-54, and the second leading cause of death for people 10 to 34 years old. Recently, the hotline number was changed, and it is crucial information for those who have, are, and will be going through hard times to know.

The Federal Communications Commision changed the number to 988. Previously, the hotline read:1-800-237-TALK. According to the FCC, the aim of this change is to reduce the amount of mental health calls that 911 receives on the daily. The earliest date for the number to be in effect is July 16th, 2022.

The Associated Press expresses how when the number is dialed, the caller will be “routed to one of 163 crisis centers.”

Besides the actual number, nothing else will change.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that between 1999 and 2017, suicide rates related to age have increased by 33%.

What does this mean for MECA students?

Students should know that there is always help available. This could be through Ms. Contreras, teachers, and others within the school community. Stress and academics are factors that play a part of the role of suicide or suicidal thoughts. By talking to the counselors and teachers, the stress could be alleviated. Students should know that the school community is here for them.

Many have personal mental health struggles that contribute to thoughts of suicide, but not to worry, in turn there are resources at Mt. SAC ECA. There are therapists available and programs that can help provide you with personal therapists.
